What is Youth Mental Health First Aid USA?

Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) USA is an early intervention public education program. It teaches adults how to recognize the signs and symptoms that suggest a potential mental health challenge, how to listen nonjudgmentally, give reassurance to a youth who may be experiencing a mental health challenge, and refer a person to appropriate professional support and services.

Why Youth Mental Health First Aid USA?

1 in 5 teens and young adults live with a mental condition, but many are reluctant to seek help or might not know where to turn for care. Early detection could prevent devastating delays towards successful adulthood. This 6-hour training gives adults who work with youth the skills they need to reach out and provide initial support to children and adolescents (ages 6-18) who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care.

What to expect?

Recently, this training is available virtually. Therefore, First Aiders will complete a 2-hour, self-paced online class, then participate in a 4- to 5-hour Instructor-led videoconference via zoom. Please make sure to check your email junk folders for your link to the self-paced class and from the instructor to complete prior to training date. If you don’t receive anything a week before the training, contact the instructor.

On Friday, Delhi Community Health Center will be offering Youth Mental Health First Aid training virtually free of charge to you. For more information, call (318) 878-6134 ext. 6034 or email kdavis@delhihospital.com.
